The Monkey Islands by Boat

The Guide
Monkey Island, Panama: What the Tour Is and Which One to Book
Where the islands are, the monkeys you see, what each tour costs once the fee on the day is added, and when to go.
Monkey Island, or Isla Monos to Panamanian guides, is a group of small forested islands in Gatun Lake, the lake in the middle of the Panama Canal. The lake was made by damming the Chagres River: the Panama Canal Authority dates the dam’s closure to 1913, and the water flooded the river valley between Gamboa and Gatun. The lake covers about 423 square kilometres (163 square miles) and sits 26 metres above sea level; ships climb up to it through the locks and cross it on their way between the oceans. Its islands are what stayed above the water, from Barro Colorado, the largest, down to islets a few trees wide. A Monkey Island tour is a boat trip from Gamboa, the canal town where the Chagres enters the lake, 45 minutes’ drive from Panama City, to watch white-faced capuchins, mantled howler monkeys and Geoffroy’s tamarins in the trees at the water’s edge while cargo ships pass on the canal.
The short answer
For one tour, take Monkey Sightseeing Panama’s canal wildlife day. It runs five hours from your Panama City hotel: a safari truck around Soberania National Park looking for sloths, toucans and iguanas, a boat down the Chagres River onto Gatun Lake past ships in the canal, the islands where the three monkey species live, a short guided rainforest walk and a stop at the operator’s rainforest cafe. Binoculars, a spotting scope and a raincoat are lent. It costs from $60 a person on GetYourGuide, with 2,230 reviews (checked October 2026), and $20 a person for the park and the lake is paid to the guide on the day, on top of the ticket (checked October 2026). Budget about $80 a person in all.
Check dates for the wildlife day
Two things to know before you book. The tour does not go into the canal locks: you see the ships on the lake, not in a lock chamber. And it is not for people with limited mobility, and no animals may come along, assistance animals included, because the monkeys are territorial.

Where Monkey Island is

| Place | What is there | For a Monkey Island tour |
|---|---|---|
| Panama City | Hotels, Casco Viejo, the Amador cruise terminal | Almost every tour picks you up here |
| Miraflores Locks | The Panama Canal visitor center on the Pacific side | Locks and islands in one morning |
| Gamboa | The canal town where the Chagres River meets the lake, its public dock and marina | The boats leave from here |
| Gatun Lake | The canal’s lake, with ships crossing between the locks | The monkey islands, a short boat ride from Gamboa |
| Soberania National Park | Rainforest from the canal’s east bank to Gamboa, with Pipeline Road | The wildlife day's safari truck and walk |
| Barro Colorado Island | The lake’s largest island, a Smithsonian research reserve since 1923 | Not on these tours; visits are booked separately with the Smithsonian |
| Colon | The Caribbean end of the canal, the Agua Clara and Gatun Locks and the Colon 2000 cruise terminal | Cruise passengers docked here drive about an hour to Gamboa |
The Panama City and cruise ports guide covers pickup zones, the hotel areas that cost extra, and the trips sold to cruise passengers.
The monkeys you see
Three monkeys live on the islands, and the tours name all three: the white-faced capuchin, black with a cream face and shoulders; the mantled howler, large and dark, whose calls carry across the water; and Geoffroy’s tamarin, a small black-and-white monkey with a russet nape. With luck you also see sloths in the shoreline trees, crocodiles and caimans on the banks, turtles, iguanas, toucans, herons and snail kites. Nothing is guaranteed: the animals are wild.
You watch the monkeys from the boat at the islands’ edge; no trip here sells a landing, so do not count on going ashore or touching a monkey. Panama’s national rules for visitors to protected areas, in force since May 2026, ban feeding wild animals. The monkeys guide covers each species and the sloths.
What it costs, with the fee paid on the day
The ticket price is not always the whole price. Several tours charge a boat, dock or park fee on the day, and the listing prices below leave it out:
| Tour | Listing price | Paid on the day |
|---|---|---|
| Canal wildlife day (Monkey Sightseeing Panama) | From $60 | $20 park and lake fee |
| Gatun Lake boat (My friend Mario) | From $30 | $20 dock fee |
| Monkey and sloth jungle tour (Panama A la Carte) | From $30 in current promotion (usually $60) | $20 boat ride |
| Monkey and sloth islands boat (Safe Transportation Panama) | From $69 | Nothing: the boat is included |
| Miraflores Locks and Monkey Island (Safe Transportation Panama) | From $108 in current promotion (usually $120) | Nothing: the boat and the visitor center are included |
| Canal locks and Monkey Island (Jhaline Tours Panama) | From $89 in current promotion (usually $119) | The Miraflores visitor center ticket |
Listing prices checked October 2026; the charges on the day are those each listing states, checked October 2026. Pickup from Playa Bonita or the airport area costs extra on most tours.
So the cheapest trip, the boat on its own, comes to about $50 a person with its fee, and the wildlife day to about $80 (checked October 2026). The Miraflores visitor center charges non-residents B/.17.22 for an adult and B/.7.22 for a child aged 6 to 12 (the balboa is on par with the dollar; checked October 2026). The Gatun Lake boat tours guide sets the boat trips side by side.
Getting there
Nearly every tour includes pickup from hotels in downtown Panama City, and you get the exact time by email the night before. The drive to Gamboa takes about 45 minutes, and several tours pass the Pedro Miguel Locks on the way. Casco Viejo’s narrow streets are another matter: My friend Mario's boat trip meets guests from Casco Viejo and Santa Ana at the Tantalo Hotel, and several operators add a charge for Playa Bonita, Costa del Este and the airport hotels. Cruise passengers docked at Amador or Colon need a trip sold for cruise passengers; the Panama City and cruise ports guide has them.
When to go
The tours run all year, rain or shine. Panama’s dry season runs from about mid-December to April: the Smithsonian’s rain gauge on Barro Colorado, in the middle of the lake, averages 32 mm of rain in February against 426 mm in November, the wettest month. In the rainy months bring a rain layer for the open boat; the wildlife day lends raincoats and Panama A la Carte's monkey and sloth tour lends ponchos. The best time guide has the rain month by month.
Who should pick something else
- You want to see a ship in a lock chamber: the monkey boats stay on the lake. Pair the islands with the Miraflores Locks; the canal locks and Monkey Island guide compares the combined tours.
- Sloths are the point: wild sloths are a matter of luck, while Gamboa’s sloth sanctuary shows rescued two- and three-toed sloths. See Monkey Island and sloths.
- You want to meet people as well as monkeys: a full day adds an Embera village on the Chagres River; see Monkey Island and an Embera village.
- You want the forest itself: Barro Colorado Island, the Smithsonian’s research island, takes visitors on guided day visits from its dock in Gamboa, booked with the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, at $125 for a foreign adult, never on a Monday or a Friday, and only from age 12 (checked October 2026).
- You want your group alone on the boat: Panamanian Aventures runs a private Gatun Lake boat with a choice of start times from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm.

Monkey Island Panama: Questions
Prices and the fee on the day, which monkeys, pickup, the season and how the tours differ.
From about $30 to $150 a person on the listings, before any fee paid on the day. My friend Mario's Gatun Lake boat is from $30 on Viator (checked October 2026), Monkey Sightseeing Panama's canal wildlife day from $60 and Tao Travel 365 Tours' trip with the sloth sanctuary from $150 on GetYourGuide (checked October 2026). The boat and the wildlife day each add $20 a person paid on the day, for the boat or the park and lake; some tours, such as Safe Transportation Panama's, include the boat in the price (checked October 2026).
A charge for the boat, the dock or the park and lake, paid to the guide on the day and left out of the listing price. My friend Mario calls it a dock fee, Panama A la Carte a boat ride, and Monkey Sightseeing Panama a park and Gatun Lake fee; each is $20 a person (checked October 2026). Read the listing's exclusions before you book, and bring small bills.
White-faced capuchins, mantled howler monkeys and Geoffroy's tamarins. Those are the three every tour names. The howlers' calls carry across the water; the tamarins are the smallest of the three. Sloths, crocodiles, caimans, iguanas, turtles and toucans are possible too. The monkeys guide covers each one.
You watch the monkeys from the boat at the islands' edge; no trip here sells a landing, so do not count on going ashore or touching a monkey. If you want to walk in Gatun Lake's forest, the Smithsonian runs guided day visits to Barro Colorado Island from its dock in Gamboa, booked with the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute ($125 a foreign adult, age 12 and over, no visits on Mondays or Fridays; checked October 2026).
No, and you should not. Panama's national visitor rules for protected areas, in force since May 2026, expressly ban feeding wild animals. Keep your food in your bag and watch the monkeys from the boat.
About 45 minutes by road to Gamboa, then a short boat ride. Almost every tour picks you up at a hotel in downtown Panama City or Casco Viejo; pickups from Playa Bonita, Costa del Este or the airport hotels usually cost extra. The Panama City and cruise ports guide has the details.
Yes, with a tour sold for cruise passengers. Safe Transportation Panama and R&E Transfer Panama do not pick up at the cruise terminals. Almiza tour by My friend Mario runs a Gatun Lake shore excursion that meets passengers at the gate of the cruise terminal on the Amador Causeway, from $95 (checked October 2026). Ships at Colon 2000 are about an hour from Gamboa by road, so leave a margin before all-aboard.
The dry season, from about mid-December to April. The tours run all year, rain or shine, but the Smithsonian's gauge on Barro Colorado, in the lake, averages 32 mm of rain in February and 426 mm in November. The best time guide has every month.
On the tours on this site, yes, up to 24 hours before for a full refund. That is the term on every GetYourGuide and Viator listing used here. Panama A la Carte and Tao Travel 365 Tours run in rain or shine, so bring a rain layer rather than counting on a weather cancellation.
