Gatun Lake Boat Tours Compared

Gatun Lake boat tours from Gamboa to Monkey Island: five trips side by side, with the listing price, the fee paid on the day, hours, group size and start times.

Updated October 2026

A Gatun Lake boat tour leaves Gamboa, where the Chagres River enters the Panama Canal, and runs out among the lake’s small forested islands to watch capuchins, howler monkeys and tamarins from the boat, with cargo ships passing in the channel. The boat time is about two hours; with the drive from a Panama City hotel, most trips take three and a half to four and a half hours. The cheapest is My friend Mario’s riverboat, from $30 a person on GetYourGuide plus a $20 dock fee paid on the day, so about $50 in all; the cheapest with the boat already in the price is Safe Transportation Panama’s, from $69 on Viator (checked October 2026).

Powerd by GetYourGuide

My friend Mario’s trip is the same one Almiza tour by My friend Mario sells on Viator as its Gatun Lake monkeys and wildlife tour, rated 4.8 from 2,427 reviews there (checked October 2026). Book on whichever site you use; the calendar above is the GetYourGuide one.

Which boat to take

  • The lowest price: My friend Mario’s riverboat, about $50 a person with the dock fee. It runs twice a day, a morning and a midday departure (7:00 am and 11:30 am on Viator), with pickups from about 6:15 am, and guests in Casco Viejo or Santa Ana meet the van at the Tantalo Hotel.
  • No cash on the day: the monkey and sloth islands boat has the ride in the price, in groups of ten at most, with pickups at about 8:00 am and 1:30 pm. The tour has no toilet stop once it leaves, so go before pickup.
  • A small group: Monkey Adventures Panama's Gatun Lake trip takes seven at most.
  • Your own boat: Panamanian Aventures’ private Gatun Lake boat meets you in your hotel lobby and offers start times from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm, from $75 a person (checked October 2026); the boat ride fee is extra.
  • More than the boat: Panama A la Carte adds a 2 km walk on Pipeline Road in Soberania National Park, and the canal wildlife day adds a safari truck for sloths and a rainforest walk.

What happens on the boat

The vans drive about 45 minutes from Panama City to Gamboa, past the forest of Soberania National Park. The boat leaves from Gamboa’s marina or public dock and runs down the last stretch of the Chagres River onto the lake. Out on Gatun Lake you share the water with the ships crossing the canal: the Panama Canal Authority counted 13,951 transits in its 2026 fiscal year, about 38 a day. Then the boat turns in among the islands and pulls in close to the trees, where the guide points out the monkeys.

You watch the monkeys from the boat at the islands’ edge; no trip here sells a landing, so do not count on going ashore or touching a monkey. Sightings vary from trip to trip, and no operator guarantees them. The monkeys guide describes each species.

What to bring

  • Cash: small dollar bills for the dock or boat fee, and for a tip.
  • Sun and rain cover: a hat, sunscreen and a light rain jacket; the boat is out in the open for two hours.
  • Insect repellent, and binoculars or a camera with a zoom for the monkeys in the treetops.
  • Comfortable shoes for getting in and out of the boat. My friend Mario’s trip is unsuitable for people with back problems or wheelchair users.
