Monkey Island and an Embera Village in One Day

Monkey Island and an Embera village in one day from Panama City: the tour, lunch, the US$35 cash fee and the Embera-only day.

Updated November 2026

You can see an Embera village on the Chagres River and the monkey islands of Gatun Lake in one day from Panama City: six and a half to seven hours, with hotel pickup. The day with lunch in the village is Safe Transportation Panama’s Panama City: Tour to Monkey Island and Embera Village, from $129 a person (checked October 2026), plus US$35 a person in cash for the village and the Chagres National Park fee, which the guide collects at pickup. If the village matters more than the monkeys, an Embera-only day costs less and spends longer there.

What the day holds

On Safe Transportation Panama’s day the van drives about 50 minutes from Panama City into Chagres National Park, and a canoe takes you up the Chagres River to an Embera village. There the community welcomes you, one of its leaders talks about their culture, and they perform traditional music and dance; you can walk around the village and buy the crafts the families make, and lunch is fried fish, fried plantains and fruit in season. About two hours later the van takes you down the river valley to Gamboa, 45 to 50 minutes, for an hour and a half by boat on Gatun Lake to the monkey islands, before the drive back to your hotel.

Barefoot Panama Tours runs a seven-hour version in a small group (the same day is also on Viator): about two hours by boat on Gatun Lake and the edge of Soberania National Park first, then upriver from Gamboa to the village, a short trail where the villagers show how they use the forest’s plants, and a dance, with a stop for lunch on the way back to Panama City (lunch is not included).

The fees

The US$35 paid in cash covers two things: entry to Chagres National Park, and the community’s own charge for the visit. MiAmbiente’s rate for the park, unchanged since 2008, is B/.5.00 for a foreign visitor (the balboa is on par with the dollar), B/.3.00 for Panamanians and resident foreigners, and nothing for children under 12 (Resolución DM-0013-2024; checked November 2026). At that rate the park’s share of the US$35 is five dollars, and the rest is the community’s. The park covers more than 131,000 hectares of forest around the upper Chagres and protects the drinking water of Panama City and Colón.

The villages are on the Chagres River and the shores of Gatun Lake; Gamboa, where the monkey boats leave, sits where the river meets the canal.

Which village?

The tours do not name the village on their listings. Embera communities that receive visitors include Parara Puru on the Chagres River, inside Chagres National Park, and Embera Quera by Gatun Lake. Whichever you visit, the crafts on sale help the families who live there.

If you would rather spend the morning with people than monkeys, embera-village-tour.com covers the canoe trips from Puerto Corotú to the Embera villages on the Chagres, with the cash fees and what to bring.

What to bring

  • Cash for the park and community fee, and for crafts.
  • Shoes with a good grip that you do not mind getting wet; on the Embera-only day the waterfall path is rocky, muddy and slippery.
  • A swimsuit under your clothes if your tour swims in the river, and a change of clothes for the way back.
  • Sun cover and insect repellent.
