Monkey Island from Panama City and the Cruise Ports
Getting to Monkey Island from Panama City, Casco Viejo, Playa Bonita, the airport, the Amador cruise terminal or Colon: pickup rules, extra charges and timing.
Monkey Island is a boat ride from Gamboa, about 45 minutes by road from Panama City, and almost every tour includes pickup at a downtown hotel. You do not need to get to Gamboa yourself. Casco Viejo, Playa Bonita, Costa del Este and the airport hotels are the exceptions: some operators meet Casco Viejo guests at one hotel and charge extra for the outlying areas. Cruise passengers need a trip sold for cruise passengers, because several land tours do not collect from the terminals. For a hotel pickup, the canal wildlife day collects guests from more than 40 Panama City hotels, from $60 a person (checked October 2026).
Pickup from Panama City hotels
The vans collect you from your hotel lobby and bring you back to it. The exact time comes by email the night before; on the canal wildlife day pickups can start up to an hour before the tour time, so be ready early. The first departures pick up from about 6:30 am, and most operators also run a late-morning or an early-afternoon trip, around 10:00 am or 1:00 to 1:30 pm.
| Where you stay | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Downtown hotels and apartments, Albrook included | Included; each listing names the hotels it collects from |
| Casco Viejo and Santa Ana | My friend Mario's boat trip meets guests at the Tantalo Hotel because of the traffic in the old town; Safe Transportation Panama's tours collect from Casco Viejo |
| Costa del Este and Santa Maria | Tao Travel 365 Tours charges extra: $10 a person on its sloth sanctuary tour |
| Playa Bonita, across the canal | Usually extra: $30 a group on Safe Transportation Panama's and Jhaline Tours Panama's tours, $20 a person (two minimum) on My friend Mario's |
| Tocumen airport hotels | Extra or by arrangement; Panama Day Trips asks guests from the airport area to make their own way |

How long it takes
From downtown Panama City to Gamboa is about 45 minutes by road, and the boat ride from Gamboa to the islands is short. With the boat’s two hours on the lake, a boat-only trip is back at your hotel three and a half to four and a half hours after pickup; the canal wildlife day takes five. Gamboa sits on the canal at the north end of the Culebra Cut, where the Chagres River joins the lake, and on the way several tours pass the Pedro Miguel Locks.

From a cruise ship
Panama has two cruise ports for this trip. On the Pacific side, the cruise terminal on the Amador Causeway, at Isla Perico, is the only terminal of its kind on that coast, by the Panama Maritime Authority’s description; Gamboa is about 45 minutes away by road. On the Caribbean side, cruise ships dock at Colon 2000 in Colon, about an hour from Gamboa by road. Safe Transportation Panama and R&E Transfer Panama do not pick up at the cruise terminals.
The trip built for this comes from Almiza tour by My friend Mario, who also runs the Gatun Lake boat from Panama City hotels: its Gatun Lake wildlife shore excursion is sold to cruise passengers only, and the guide meets the group at the cruise terminal gate with a sign, and the trip lasts three and a half hours, with start times of 6:00 am and 11:00 am, from $95 a person (checked October 2026).
Before booking any shore excursion, compare its length with your time in port: allow for the drive, the boat and a margin before all-aboard, and keep the tour operator’s phone number with you.

Driving or a taxi to Gamboa
You can reach Gamboa by car or taxi and look for a boat there, but the tours on this site are sold with pickup, and the prices include the van; arriving on your own saves little. Gamboa’s public dock is where the park service sends visitors for boat tours, and the Smithsonian’s dock there is the start of the Barro Colorado visits.
